Red with his award from the New England Book Fesitval

The fourth annual 2011 New England Book Festival was held recently at the Omni Parker House Hotel in downtown Boston. Over one hundred authors and guests were in attendance. Twenty-seven awards in thirteen categories were presented to those authors in attendance from various parts of the northeast and Canada. Only five percent of books entered from around the world received recognition including The Last Fling by John B. Cummings, Jr. from Westport whose book has been highly acclaimed. Honorees were told that they represent the best of what the current book publishing has to offer.

Group of authors who received awards from the New England Book Fesitval

There were sixteen categories in which hundreds of entries were judged. Submitted works were judged by a panel of industry experts including authors, publishers, journalists and agents using the following criteria:

1) general excellence and the author's passion for telling a good story.
2) the potential of the work to reach a wider audience.

"The Last Fling" tells of life in the mid-20th century in Westport and highlights stories from Hurricane Carol in 1954. It is a fascinating tale of a life-altering event of courage, terror and survival. The book was cited in the General Non-Fiction classification.

Veteran Association Receive Surprise Gift

Red donates book proceeds to Veteran's Associationfrom left to right : Veteran, Octavio Camara, Meg Bouchard, Ex. Director, accepts a donation and a copy of "The Last Fling", author John "Red" Cummings and veteran, Larry Lopes

The Veterans Association of Bristol County, Inc, a United Way agency headquartered in Fall River received an early Christmas present recently when John B. "Red" Cummings Jr. author, of the popular book, "The Last Fling" presented a check and a copy of his book to the organization as a result of book sales made over Veteran's Day weekend last month.

Cummings donated $5 for every book sold through the book's web site, www.thelastfling.net to the organization in appreciation of veterans for their serviced to our country. Cummings also offered free shipping during the promotion, which remains in effect through yearend.

A check and a copy of the book The Last Fling was presented to Meg Bouchard, the Executive Director of the organization and will help enable the organization to continue offering Drug and Rehabilitation Counseling, Affordable Counseling, Phone Counseling and Professional Counseling to area veterans at it's headquarters on Pine St. in Fall River.

During this promotion, individuals from California, Arizona, Georgia as well as Rhode Island and Massachusetts purchased the book.

"The Last Fling" is a fascinating tale of a life-altering event of courage, terror and survival. It speaks of the spirit of the times. It is an absolutely vivid and charming depiction of life at another time, in a specific place. Most importantly, it is a story about a community, its people and the human spirit and how we all manage to survive in times of disaster.

Best selling author Ann Hood (The Red Thread and The Knitting Circle) describes the book as follows: "The Last Fling took me to the seaside town of my imagination, and brings it to life. Wistful and charming, it evokes a simpler time juxtaposed against one of the worst hurricanes of the century."

This book can be purchased at local bookstores or directly from the author at www.thelastfling.net
